The burial ground was established 
in the 13th century. It was later enlarged in 1783 and 1810, and closed to burials in 1855. 
The site was transformed into a public garden and opened in 1883. 
Today, it serves as a park with historic monuments, and the former Watch House operates as a café.

There are approximately 108,000 burials recorded in the parish registers.
